Robert Gundry on John 19:30

Commenting on John 19:30 and τετελεσται, Robert Gundry wrote:

By itself the final outcry of Jesus is ambiguous. But it should be translated “They are finished!” rather than “It is finished!” because it echoes the statement in 19:28 that Jesus knew “all were now finished.” Again the reference is to all his signs, works, and words—done and said to take away the world’s sins. (Robert H. Gundry, Commentary on the New Testament: Verse-by-Verse Explanations with a Literal Translation [Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2010], 453, italics in original)
