Heber C. Kimball on God's Fatherly Discipline


In a sermon dated 6 April 1857, Heber C. Kimball said the following wherein he affirmed that God can and does punish believers, not with legal, but fatherly disciplines:

If we sin, and do not repent; God will chastise us until we do repent of and forsake all sin; but He never will scourge us so long as we do right. (JOD 5:19)

Of course, if we continue willfully sinning, we will be disinherited. Furthermore, there are the punishments of hell itself that those who will be heirs to the telestial kingdom that one will have to endure to expiate posthumously from their sins (D&C 76:104-106). For a discussion of this, see:
