John J. Collins and Rebecca Raphael on Satan in Job being a Member of God’s Court

The Wager in Heaven (1:6-12)

The scene shifts abruptly to the heavenly court. The Satan is not the later Christian personification of evil, but rather one of the heavenly beings whose function is to perform surveillance and to find fault (1:7). (John J. Collins and Rebecca Raphael, “Job,” in The Jerome Biblical Commentary for the Twenty-First Century, ed. John J. Collins, Gina Hens-Piazza, Barbara Reid, and Donald Senior [3d ed.; London: T&T Clark, 2022], 634)
