Ulrich W. Mauser on the Mode of Baptism in Light of the Typological Interpretation Found in 1 Corinthians 10

The idea of baptism as a process of submersion in water is achieved by Paul in the case of the crossing of the Red Sea by the simultaneous reference to the cloud and the sea. The cloud is of watery substance and so Israel is veritably surrounded by water. (Ulrich W. Mauser, Christ in the Wilderness [Studies in biblical Theology First Series No. 39; London: SCM Press, 1963; repr., Eugene, Oreg.: Wipf and Stock, 2009], 64 n. 4)
