Terry J. Wright's (Protestant) Cautions Concerning the Aaronic Priesthood in Hebrews

That another priesthood exists, apparently in competition with the Aaronic order, certainly suggests that there is some kind of flaw with the latter – otherwise there would be no reason for this second order to exist (7:11). (Terry J. Wright, Providence Made Flesh: Divine Presence as a Framework for a Theology of Providence [Paternoster Theological Monographs; Eugene, Oreg.: Wipf and Stock, 2009], 183)

We must not assume that Hebrews affirms the superiority of the new priesthood because the former was ineffective. His entire argument depends on the validity of the Mosaic Law and its sacrificial system; . . . (Ibid., 183 n. 74)
