G. K. Beale on 1 Corinthians 4:6 and "not to exceed what is written"

. . . Paul’s reference “not to exceed what is written” probably includes also the idea of the written OT Scriptures in general. The planting by Pual and the watering by Apollos certainly focused on the OT, especially in how the OT had begun fulfillment in Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. And it was this preaching of Christ as the fulfillment of OT Scripture that Pual “laid” as a “foundation” and upon which Apollos was “building” (3:10b). If church leaders do not build on the foundation with God’s word from the OT, fulfilled in Christ, then the church will not be in good spiritual health, and at the time of judgment, it will be “burned up” (3:15).
