Arch S. Reynolds on JST 2 Peter 1:20

2 Pet 1:19-20 in the KJV and the JST reads thusly:

KJV

NT MS 2, p. 145

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Verse 19th We have therefore a more sure knowledge of the word of prophecy, whereunto <to which word of prophecy> ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light which shineth in a dark place, untill the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts[;]<,>

=20th Knowing this that first, that no prophecy of the schriptures is of given given of any privite will of man.

Commenting on the changes to v. 19, Arch S. Reynolds in his study of the JST form 1957 wrote that:

The Inspired Version refutes the idea that prophecy is not of private interpretation. If we say this, then we must not try to solve or interpret any of the prophecies, but leave them to others to unfold. I do not believe the King James rendering, but the Inspired quotation becomes clear and necessary if we wish to know the signs of the times and prepare for Christ’s coming. (Arch S. Reynolds, A Study of Joseph Smith’s Bible Revisions: Its Relation to Other Versions and a History of Its Coming Forth [Springville, Utah: Arch S. Reynolds, 1957], 146)
