[12] And having turned suddenly
toward the voice of the Lord, he saw seven shining candlesticks, [13] and in
the midst of them Christ the Lord, whose appearance he explains through
mystical comparisons. For he was clothed in a robe which there is no doubt
pertains to his priesthood. He was “girt over the paps with a golden girdle”
because of the fact that the integrity of his actions was shining. [14] Indeed,
his head and hair, which were white, show that he is the most Ancient of Days. Moreover,
his “eyes were like a flame of fire” because he penetrates all things with his
gaze, and “No one is able to hide himself from his heat.” [15] His feet were similar
to brass because he is found to be very strong and very glorious in his
preaching. “His voice was as the sound of many waters,” since rivers of wisdom
proceed from it. [16] But concerning the seven stars, he explains below. “And
from his mouth came a two-edged sword” signifies the mysteries of the New and
Old Testaments. His face shone as the sun, since whatever it does not gaze upon
is in a shadow. (Cassiodorus, “Brief Explanations on the Apocalypse,” in Cassiodorus,
