The
following are from six popes who affirmed that, based on Matt 16:18, the Church
was founded by Christ on the confession of
Peter, not the person of St. Peter:
Pope Felix
III: Et super ista confessione aedificabo Ecclesiam meam (Fifth Epistle to the
Emperor Zeno)
Pope Hormisdas:
Sancti . . . qui beati Petri fidem secuti sunt, per quam aedificata est
Ecclesia Christi. (Commonitorium)
Pope Gregory
I: In petra Ecclesiae, hoc est, in confessione beati Petri Apost. (Lib. Iii,
Epist. 33, to Queen Theodelina)
Pope Hadrian
I: Petri fidem supra quam fundatur Ecclesia Christi. (Epist. Actione II.
Septimae Synodi)
Pope John
VIII: Supra quam etiam solidam confessionis petram suam Dominus Ecclesiam
fabricavit. (Epistles 76, ad Petrum Comitem)
Pope Stephen
V: Ecclesia fundata supra firmam petram, Apostoli videlicet Petri Confessionem.
(Epist. Ii., universis Episcopis, &c)
