Interesting Portions of the Armenian Christian Text “Adamgirk’ 1” (1403)

The following citations are taken from

Michael E. Stone, Adamgirk’: The Adam Book of Aṙak’el of Siwnik’ (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007)

Before all existing beings,
The uncreated Trinity,
Without place, time or limit,
Brought all beings into existence.

First, He made matter from nothing,
Second, all the species,
Third, the luminous beings,
Fourth, the substantial elements. (1.1.1-2) (p. 85)

Then God took them,
And place them in the Paradise of joy,
There, having married them, he blessed [them],
‘Fill the earth with an increase of good things’. (1.1.29) (p. 89)

Demons are good by nature,
But their will is evil, whatever it be.

Everybody reproaches evil,
But who is without evil? (1.8.24) (p. 130)

The Lord says

I say to you, O subtle serpent,
Who instructed the ignorant woman,
Although this was at least a transgression,
Yet ‘twas not by you, but by the Evil One.

I created you a very clever serpent,
So that you might distinguish evil from good.

You became pre-eminent in evil,
You fought against the image of man.

You should have stopped your ear,
So as not to hear the arch-magician’s voice.
Lest the first Evil One mix for you,
The potion of evil poison.

I created your nature sinless,
You were filled with the mortal poison.
Because of your deadly poisons,
Everybody kills you.

What shall I do to your person,
For you became a model of the Devil.
Although you are not the first Evil One,
Yet you were the cause of evil
. (1.13.1-5) (p. 158)

He who is born through the spirit of God,
Is unable to sin, it says.
And if by mind he transgresses at all,
Immediately he reproaches himself. (1.17.68) (p. 190; cf. 1 John 3:6, 9)

The matter of this discourse suffices,
[For those] who tremble at the fear of God,
But he who has not fear in his heart,
Is classed in the rank of the unfaithful.

The priest has the rank of an angel,
He who is classed in the rank of demons,
If he repents he is freed,
Yet is no longer called angel. (1.20.50-51) (p. 205)

Adam bore the mother of his son,
For this highest mystery.
God the Father created a most pure virgin,
Mother and bearer of His holy Son.

Eve saw the murdered son,
And lamented grievously.
And Mary saw her crucified Son,
And she wept inconsolably.

The man bore a woman without mother,
As a mystery for us here.
The woman bore a Man without father,
God Jesus, great and mighty. (1.21.19-21) (pp. 207-8)
