On the phrase “above that which has been written” (1 Cor 4:6), Conybeare and Howson wrote that:
This is ambiguous; the phrase is commonly employed in
reference to the Old Testament; but here it suits better with the context to
take it as referring to the preceding remarks of St. Paul himself. (W. J.
