Glossa Ordinaria on Revelation 17:10

Five are fallen. If Adam had continued in obedience, he would not be turned to any pleasure by the senses of his body; but they have been so corrupted by sin that it is now natural to seek things that are soft to the touch, good-tasting, melodious, sweet-smelling, and beautiful to see. These are the five kings through whom the Devil governs men in childhood, because he was himself the cause for their being corrupted. These are the five husbands of the Samaritan woman (ref. John 4:18). IN youth succeeds error; for once one has got discernment, if one sins, it is no longer imputed to the senses, but to error, concerning which the Lord said, “he whom you now have is now your husband”, because it is the spirit of error, which is an adulterer in the house of our flesh, because the legitimate husband is the spirit of reason, which rules over the five senses of the body as a master in his house rules over his servants. This spirit of reason the elect assume in the age of discernment. (Consolamini Commentary Series: The Glossa Ordinaria on Revelation: An English Translation [trans.
