In March 2024, LDS apologist Hayden Carrol debated (and defeated) Daniel Ortner on the debate topic, “How Do We Determine God’s Truth”:
Ortner raised a number of "proof-texts" such as Luke 24:44 and Matt 23//Luke 11 and the "blood of Abel to Zechariah" arguments in these debates. I actually directly interacted with Ortner on a facebook group on these issues, showing that even Protestant scholars think his arguments were utterly bogus. See, for e.g.:
Comments on Luke 24:44 and Luke 11:50-51//Matthew 23:35
Showing he is intellectually disingenuous and not interested in the truth and wants to deceive, he repeated, without any substantial change, his "arguments," instead special pleading ("scripture" = "the Bible") and topics (e.g., ignores how the biblical authors had other sources of revelation and normative authorities during times of inscripturation, etc):
Bound by the Scriptures: Why I Believe in Sola Scriptura
Compare and contrast Ortner's eisegesis and special pleading with the following:
Not By Scripture Alone: A Latter-day Saint Refutation of Sola Scriptura
Topics Ortner did not (and cannot) deal with include the binding, normative authority of the Church (per Acts 15 and related texts), as well as an exegesis of some of the "better" texts (e.g., 2 Tim 3:16-17) and weak texts (Acts 17:11; Heb 1:1-2; Gal 1:8) he uses to support Sola Scriptura. Ortner knew about my work on this topic. If he wants to be taken seriously by Latter-day Saints, it would behoove him to deal with the best we have to offer. But that would not help in his goal to deceive and continue in his own self-deception.
Ortner has been running away from me from debating this particular topic, and it should be clear that even he knows he would be destroyed exegetically on the topic. Furthermore, the fact that he would repeat such lousy arguments which he knows to be refuted even by his fellow religionists shows he is a conscious liar and fraud.
My friend Travis Anderson has a discussion with Ortner that touched upon this and related issues. Daniel lied by claiming I "insulted" his kids as a justification to run away from a debate on Sola Scriptura. All I said was that he brought his family, including his kids, into a false religion (Protestantism). For someone who thinks I am a member of a false religion and will spend eternity in hell, he was making excuses.
