Melvin Brooks on the Atonement being a “Propitiation”

Propitiation. See ATONEMENT, SIN. The term connotes “pacification,” or “appeasement.” In this sense, Jesus Christ “appeased” judgment, or satisfied judgment, when he gave his life for us.

Our sins may be forgiven provided we repent. We cannot be saved in our sins. (Melvin Brooks, LDS Reference Encyclopedia [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1960], 398)
