Carthage (417) on the Immortality of Adam before the Fall

At the Council of Carthage (417), we read the following concerning Adam before the Fall:

1. If any one says that Adam, the first man, was created mortal, so that, whether he sinned or not, he would have died from natural causes, and not as the wages of sin, let him be anathema. (Documents of the Christian Church, ed. Henry Bettenson [2d ed.; Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1963], 59)
