Here one is
faced with the complexities of Matthew’s use of the Old Testament. Matthew is
unique in his ten fulfillment quotations which include 2:15. I think it best to
view Matthew’s use of the Old Testament in the sense of sensus plenior. In this
view, the full extent of meaning in the Old Testament text in question was not completely
understood by the original human author. The full extent of meaning is now
detectable in light of new revelatory fulfillment in Christ and the new day of salvation
