[T]here are hints of escape from Sheol
that began to point to resurrection. Despite the seeming inevitability of
descent to Sheol, there are glimmers of hope for escaping this place of the
dead. The book of Proverbs says, “The wise man’s path leads upwards to life, /
that he may avoid Sheol beneath” (Prov 15:24). The psalmist, too, holds out
hope for deliverance: “But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, /
for he will receive me” (Ps 49:15). Even more strikingly, Ps 16, attributed to
King David, speaks of a hope to be delivered from Sheol: “For you will not
abandon my soul to Sheol, / or let your holy one see corruption” (Ps 16:10
