There is no uniform
sacramental doctrine in the patristic era, but there is a strong enough
consensus to affirm that they held what has come to be called a realistic view.
That is to say, when the New Testament speaks of the sacraments—in this case,
baptism—as being remission of sins, death of the old self, and entrance into
Christ’s risen life, forgiveness, and the gift of the Spirit, it is not
speaking merely in figurative terms. (Michael Horton, Justification, 2
vols. [New Studies in Dogmatics; Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan, 2018], 1:260)
