In D&C 6:13, it is explicitly taught that eschatological salvation is not a wage one has earned, but a gift:
If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God, which is the greatest of all the gifts of God; for there is no gift greater than the gift of salvation.
Stephen Robinson and H. Gean Garrett in vol. 1 of their 4-volume A Commentary on the Doctrine and Covenants, offered this note:
13. Gift of salvation. Though some would try to take credit for "working out their own salvation," the scripture here reminds us that salvation is ultimately a gift of God—not a purchase, not a contractual obligation, not a just reward or a wage. Salvation is a gift, through the mercy of God and the atonement of Christ.
