reference “not to exceed what is written” probably includes also the idea of
the written OT Scriptures in general. The planting by Pual and the watering by
Apollos certainly focused on the OT, especially in how the OT had begun
fulfillment in Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. And it was this
preaching of Christ as the fulfillment of OT Scripture that Pual “laid” as a “foundation”
and upon which Apollos was “building” (3:10b). If church leaders do not build
on the foundation with God’s word from the OT, fulfilled in Christ, then the
church will not be in good spiritual health, and at the time of judgment, it will
