B.H. Roberts, The Mormon Doctrine of Deity
Brigham
Henry Roberts (1857-1933) was a leading LDS author, scholar, and apologist in
the late 19th /early 20th century. I will admit that I am
a fan of many of his works, such as the volume, The Truth, The Way, the Life: An
Elementary Treatise on Theology , published posthumously, which is a
classic, and only recently has been superseded by the Exploring Mormon
Thought volumes by Blake Ostler .
Roberts’
classical work, The Mormon Doctrine of Deity is available online here .
While it is dated in some areas, it is a good discussion and defence of
Latter-day Saint theology, and all those interested in “Mormonism” should read
this book (and other works by Roberts).
I also came
across two presentations by Blake Ostler and Jim Faulconer on Roberts’
theodicy (explanation for the problem of evil) and doctrine of pre-mortal life and intelligences,
which are very well-informed discussions, so enjoy!
