Athanasius wrote his 22nd Festal Letter in AD 350. Only a fragment of the Greek text is conserved by Cosmas Indicopleustes. It reads:
[] so that our Lord Jesus Christ, who having accepted
death in behalf of all people, stretched out his hands, not on the earth below
but in the air, in order to show that the salvation that comes through the
cross is for all people in all places, and having destroyed the devil who is at
work in the air; he might inaugurate for us the way up to heaven and make it
free. (The Festal Letters of Athanasius of Alexandria, with the Festal Index
and the Historia Acephala [trans. David Brakke and David M. Gwynn; Translated
Texts for Historians 81; Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2022], 1873)
