There have
been at least five proposals, of varying degrees of plausibility, of the
identity of the Methodist minister Joseph Smith shared the First Vision with:
(1)
Benjamin B. Stockton; (2) George Lane; (3) Jesse Townsend; (4) Elisha House (at
least one misspelt "E. Hovar" according to p. 109 n. 242 of Quinn's
article on religious revivals) and (5) Abner Chase.
I know
there are some writings in the Church History Library (great resource).
However, I am querying if anyone knows if there are any repositories for the
personal writings/journals/monographs of these ministers? Even if not related
to the religious revivals of 1819/1820 and related topics, would be
fun/worthwhile to read their writings c. 1817 to 1824.
If you know
anything about this and/or related sources, let me know. Been wanting to delve
deeply into this particular issue for a while now.
