Luke 16:16 is a common “proof-text” for the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura. The KJV reads:
The law and the prophets were
until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man
presseth into it.
For a thorough refutation of the
claim that this teaches prophets (at least those who receive public revelation)
ceased with John the Baptist and similar claims, see the discussion of this
passage in
Not
By Scripture Alone: A Latter-day Saint Refutation of Sola Scriptura.
In the JST, Joseph Smith captures
the nuance of this verse better than most Protestant critics of the Church.
In New Testament Manuscript 2, Folio 3,
p. 86 we find the following:
Then
said Jesus unto them[;]<,> T†he law and the prophets
testify of me; Y†ea, and all the pro =phets who have written, even
untill John, have fot foretold of these days. Since that time, the
kingdom of God is preached, and every man who seeketh truth, presseth into it
