Psalm 106:31 makes a similar
statement [similar to Abraham in Gen 15:6] about Phinehas in connection with the
punishment of apostates: “And that has been reckoned to him as righteousness” [וַתֵּחָ֣שֶׁב
ל֭וֹ לִצְדָקָ֑ה לְדֹ֥ר וָ֜דֹ֗ר עַד־עוֹלָֽם] from generation to generation
forever.” Moshe Weinfeld comments on the meaning of righteousness in Deut 6:25;
“The root [צדק] has a number of meanings in biblical Hebrew. It refers both
to moral righteousness and legal innocence, with the extending meaning
of acquittal, judicial, privilege or rather credit or merit.” (Weinfeld, Deuteronomy
1-11, 349).
