In a letter dated December 23, 1851 (10 years before the U.S. Civil War began and 19 years after the reception of what is now D&C 87) addressed to Willard Richards, Henry L. Southworth noted that "South Carolina still maintains her hostile attitude" and "thus the prophecy of our beloved prophet Joseph is about being fulfilled."
