It
is the role of the Church to teach the gospel of salvation and redemption
through Jesus Christ, to administer the sacred, saving ordinances by proper
authority, to provide the basic order within which essential group action can
occur, and to preserve purity and correctness of belief and practice. Those who
insist that the Church provide for every contingency and need are as much in
error as their counterparts who demand that government intervene in every
aspect of our lives. In both instances the balance between “more” and “less” is
destroyed, with resultant detriment to human progress. (Dean L. Larsen, Free
to Act [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1989], 12)
