Pope Paul I’s letter to King Pippin (c. 762-767) and the Transfiguration of Moses

While we rehearse in our memory the stories in the divine scriptures and weigh the merits of God’s various elect and do a mental comparison of your divinely inspired zeal, we realize that you, our pre-eminent son and spiritual compater, have shown forth in these days as a new Moses. For he was commanded by the divine majesty to rescue the people of Israel from oppression by those who were afflicting them, while you, outstanding and pre-eminent king, have been divinely inspired to set free God’s holy, universal, catholic and apostolic church. Through him God gave the Hebrew people the commandments of the law on Mount Sinai and made him shine with the light of his own glory.
