Keeping the Commandments: Mission Impossible? Aspirational Only? Call to Sinless Perfection?

Latter-day Saints (and others, such as Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and some factions within Protestantism) will argue that the emphasis on keeping the commandments is evidence of a “false gospel” (cf. Gal 1:6-9), as (often Reformed) critics (mis)interprets the call to keep the commandments as a call to keep the commandments perfectly. In LDS theology, one’s “perfection” (Matt 5:48; cf. 3 Nephi 12:48) is something that will not happen until the next age, but one aspires to Christ’s admonition in the Sermon in the Mount (and the Sermon at the Temple [3 Nephi 12-14]). Notwithstanding, while it is true that Latter-day Saints emphasis obeying the commandments, we do not hold that it necessitates sinless perfection to “keep” the commandments, evidenced by all the texts that also speak of Christ being our “atoning sacrifice” (ιλασμος) in 1 John 2:1-2 (cf. Heb 2:17) and the constant calls to repentance throughout Scripture, but biblical and uniquely Latter-day Saint (Book of Mormon; Doctrine and Covenants; Pearl of Great Price). Indeed, even in the Old Testament, where the people were under the “strict schoolmaster” (to borrow Paul’s language in Gal 3:24) were said to have “kept” or obeyed completely the commandments. Notice the following two examples:

Then Joshua call the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, and said unto them, ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (Josh 22:1-2)

Be ye therefore every courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left. (Josh 23:6)

The claim that “keeping the commandments” is impossible reminds me of how Calvinist have to twist texts that speak to all people, without distinction, calling people to repentance, notwithstanding in their theology, such is an impossibility, resulting in God commanding the impossible(!), such as Zech 1:3:

Therefore say thoug unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

The Hebrew term is  שׁוב (LXX: ἐπιστρέφω)—this term is often used in the OT in the sense of "turning" or "repenting" as evidenced in Hos 3:15, 11:5; Isa 6:10, 10:22; Jer 3:7, 12, 14, 22; 4:1; 5:3; 15:7; 18:8 1 Kgs 8:35; 13:33, etc), and God’s “turning” to His people is conditioned on their “turning” to Him; this is not the monergism and compatibilism that is part-and-parcel of Reformed soteriology, but is utterly consistent with LDS theology.

To see how “keeping the commandments” is a constant drum-beat in the admonitions in both the Old and the New Testament can be seen in the following texts:

Exodus 15:26  And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
