The diction of this
verse also ties together several themes of the Garden of Eden story. The man (hā’ādām)
knew (yāda) his wife, that is, they had sex—perhaps for the first
time, although this is not highlighted. This fulfills the rule “Therefore a
man . . . cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (2:24). (Ronald
