Latter-day Saints have
a muted belief in a Mother in Heaven. The origins of this belief are hard to
trace, as there is no primary historical document showing Joseph Smith taught
this belief; the best evidence we have comes from a plural wife, Eliza R. Snow
(later a plural wife of Brigham Young’s [Eliza is also the author of the hymn, “O My Father” which has a direct reference to Heavenly Mother; it is also my
personal favourite hymn]).
Kevin L. Barney has
written an excellent article on the topic entitled, “How to Worship our Mother in Heaven (Without Getting Excommunicated).” For those interested in this
topic, one should read this piece.
