In fact, patristic error regarding the Mother
of Jesus is not simply limited to Origen or other ancient authors who lack
ecclesiastical approval. John Chrysostom declared Mary to be both suicidal on
account of her pregnancy and ambitious in her desire to demonstrate her
maternal authority over Jesus. Cyril of Alexandria held that at Calvary Mary
