Gregory the Great on Revelation 11:4 (cf. Matthew 17:11) and the Future Coming of Elijah

  

On Revelation 11.4: These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing in the light of the Lord of the earth.

 

23. Those two illustrious preachers were taken away but not before their deaths were delayed, so that they might be brought back at the end to deliver useful preaching. About them it is said by John: These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing in the sight of the Lord of the earth (Rv 11.4). One of them is promised in the Gospel through the Truth himself, saying, “Elijah is to come, and he will restore all things.” (Gregory the Great, Moralia 9.8 [9], 43-48, as found in “Testimonies of Gregory the Great on the Apocalypse,” in Cassiodorus, St. Gregory the Great, and Anonymous Greek Scholia: Writings on the Apocalypse [trans.
