As a youth the Lord worked no miracles; if He had,
everyone would have known about Him by this time. His mother also recalled John’s
testimony about Her son, and observed that disciples were already following
Him. All this gave her an indication of her Son’s power. Yet the Lord rebukes
her with good reason. “If there is no more wine,” He says, “let the hose approach
Me and ask for help, not you—because you are My mother.” If a man performs a
miracle at the request of a family member, the bystanders who witness the miracle
might suspect that it had been pre-arranged. But when the one in need of help
makes the request, there is less cause for suspicion. (Theophylact, The
Explanation of the Holy Gospel According to John [Blessed Theophylact’s Explanation
of the New Testament 4; trans. Christopher Stade; House Springs, Miss.: Chrysostom
Press, 2007], 39)
