It is generally agreed by Latter-day Saint exegetes that D&C 87, as well as prophesying of a then-future Civil War in the United States, predicts plural wars that would take place globally after this conflict. Commenting on D&C 87:6, Terry R. Baker wrote that:
Notice the Civil War was only the
beginning of wars plural on the earth in the last days and that war will
eventually be poured out upon all nations. How long will these wars and unrest
last? The answer is in Doctrine and Covenants 87 verse 6: “6 And thus,
with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn and
with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the
fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to
feel the wrath and indignation and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until
the consumption decreed hath made a full end of wall nations;”
The American Civil War started
this cycle. Wars will continue until the Second Coming. (Terry R. Baker, A
Book of Mormon Guide to the Last Days Second Coming: Patterns, Prophecies, and
Principles [2025], 232)
