The majority of manuscripts read αγιοι θεου (‘holy [people] of God [spoke]’; 01 [02]
0445 33 etc.). There is significant support for απο θεου (‘[people spoke] from God’; 𝔓72 03 025 442 1165 etc.). The latter might have been considered a harder
reading, especially as if it was construed as ‘people from God’. Alternatively,
in majuscule script ΑΠΟ
could have been misread as ΑΠΟ(Ι) especially given that αγιου appears in the previous clause. There are
a few examples of conflations reading ‘holy [people] from God’: απο θεου αγιοι (04), αγιοι απο θεου (81), demonstrating that both readings
were ancient. The genealogical coherence is good for either shorter reading. (H.
