The author of Hebrews now refers to the blood of Christ as “better
sacrifices.” The plural term sacrifices
stands for the singular “blood of Christ.” The adjective better marks the difference between earthly things and heavenly
things; that is, the blood of animals cleansed the tabernacle and everything
pertaining to it, so that the high priest might enter the Most Holy Place. The
blood of Christ cleanses the heavenly things, so that he might enter heaven in
God’s presence (9:24). (Simon J. Kistemaker and William Hendriksen, Exposition
of Hebrews [New Testament Commentary 15; Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Book
House, 1984], 262)
