3. Many think that it is either Elisha or
Moses who is with Elijah. However, both of these died. But the death of
Jeremiah was never discovered. Our ancients have handed over the opinion that
he [the other witness] was in every respect Jeremiah. For the very word that
was given to him is witness of this: “Before I formed you in the womb of your
mother, I knew you; and I appointed you prophet to the nations.”5
However, he was never a prophet among the nations, and so, since the two words
are divine, it is necessary that what God promised, that he also demonstrate,
