19 לָא כְמִלֵי בְנֵי אֲנָשָא מֵימַר אֲלָהָא בְנֵי
אֲנָשָא אָמְרִין וּמכַדְבִין וְאַף לָא כְעוּבָדֵי בְנֵי בִסרָא דְאִנוּן גָזְרִין
לְמַעֲבַד תָיְבִין וּמִתמַלכִין הוּא אָמַר וְעָבֵיד וְכֹל מֵימְרֵיה מִתקַיַים׃
“Not like the words of human beings—
the sons of men speak and lie;
nor like the deeds of mortals,
who decree that fine offerings be made and set up their
own thrones.
But He speaks and it is done,
He commands and all His words stand firm.”
Targum Pseudo-Jonathan
19 לא כמילי בר נש מימר אלוק חי וקיים ריבון כל
עלמיא ייי דבר נש אמר ומכדב ואוף לא דמיין עובדוי לעובדי בני ביסרא דמתמלכין ותייבין
ממה דגזרין ברם רבון כל עלמא ייי אמר לאסגאה ית עמא הדין הי ככוכבי שמיא ולאחסנותהון
ית ארע כנענאי האפשר דאמר ולא יעבד ומה דמליל האפשר דלא יקיימינה
"It is not like the idle speech of a mere mortal,
who says, “The living and enduring God, Sovereign of all worlds.” A man’s word
may be spoken and uttered, yet one does not reckon himself bound by the words
of Israel’s officials—those who sit enthroned and dwell according to their own
decree.
But the Master of the universe, the Lord, declared: “I
will gather this people here as the stars of heaven; and I will consign them to
lie buried on the soil of Canaan.”
Is it conceivable, He asks, that they should speak and
yet not obey? And once My word has gone forth, can it ever fail to be
fulfilled?
Targum Neofiti
19 לא כמימר בני אנשא מימריה דייי ולא כעובדהון
דבני אנשא עובדוי דייי בני אנשא אמרין ולא עבדין גזרין ולא מקיימין וחזרין וכפרין במיליהון
ברם אלהה אמר ועבד גזר ומקיים ופתגמי נבואתה קיימין לעלם׃
“Not like the sayings of mere mortals—
they speak, yet do not act;
nor like the works of flesh-born men,
who claim to serve the Lord yet neither decree with
power nor fulfill their words,
wavering and even denying what they have spoken.
But God said—and it was done;
He commanded—and it stood firm;
the utterances of His prophecy endure forever.”
