כֵין יִתאֲמַר בְסִפרָא קְרָבִין עֲבַד יוי עַל יַמָא דְסוּף וּגבוּרָן עַל נַחלֵי
אַרנֹון׃
15 וְשָפֹוך
לְנַחלַיָא דְמִדַבְרִין לִקבֵיל לְחָיַת וּמִסתְמֵיך לִתחוּם מֹואָב׃
15. “Therefore it is said in the Book of Wars:
‘The servants of the LORD shall do battle at the Sea of Reeds,
and His mighty ones at the streams of Arnon.’
16. “And He will pour out upon the desert rivers to engulf the living,
and will lean upon the border of Moab.”

בני ישראל עברין אנן נפקין לקבליהון ומקטלין יתהון ורמז רבון כל עלמא ייי דידע מה בלבביה

14. Because it is written (וּבְגִינָא דְכַתִּיב) and expounded (וּמְפָרֵשׁ)
in the Book of the Law—namely the section called in the Book of the ‘Corbiyah’
(i.e. the narrative of their approach) the episode of the crossing (נְסִיָּה)
and the mighty deed (וּגְבוּרְתָא) that the Lord performed for Israel when they
stood on the Sea of Reeds—and the mighty deed which the Lord wrought for them
when they passed through the torrents of Arnon.
15. When Israel had crossed the torrents of Arnon, the Amoraim dwelling
in the region of the Arnon plains said among themselves, “When the children of
Israel come this way, we will sally forth to ambush them and destroy them.”
But, as a hint—Master of the Universe, the Lord knows what is in their
hearts—He revealed beforehand their plot, teaching them.
They turned their chiefs from this place to that,
struck down the leaders of their warriors, and dried up their channels so that
their fields would fail. Yet they perceived not the proof and the mighty power
which the Lord had shown on behalf of Israel in the torrents of Arnon.
Afterwards those marauders dispersed, and each returned
to his own dwelling—namely to the vineyards of Kir Tahaim (קרתא כרתה)—which had
not been included in their plan of ambush. (This too was but an adjunct of the
Moabite border.)”

14. “Therefore it is said in the Book of the Law, where it is written:
‘The warriors of the LORD stand at Eth-Vehav,
and they were on the ascent of Seir;
and at the torrent of the chiselled spring.
Then, in the end of purifying, they pressed on,
and cut off the remnant of Israel from Edom and Moab.
It is said further:
“Between two mounds they plotted against Michman,
yet the people of Israel rose up and stirred the world” (a hint at those two
mounds).
“They brought judgment upon judgment,
and their slain and their land lay wasted by the streams beside the Arnon.”’
15. “And as for the outpouring of those same streams—
their land was set apart as the haunt of wild beasts—
yet that full decree stood fast,
for it was not within their power to prevail against it;
and so it became the border of Moab.”
