Verses 11-13: In
the judgment against the apostate people the prophet alludes to the rejection
of God’s word as incomprehensible. As punishment, they will get to listen to an
incomprehensible language, the language of the Assyrian attackers: “So the LORD
will speak to this people with barbarous lips and in a foreign tongue” (v. 11).
The Lord’s word—the only rescue, the offered “resting place” and “place to be
refreshed”—they had rejected and mocked as sav lasáv, sav lasáv, aqu laqáu,
qua laqáu, “a little here, a little there.” “They would not listen” (v.
12f). The consequences of their mockery and rejection of God’s Word will be catastrophic:
“They will fall backwards. They will be hurt, trapped and taken” (v. 13). (Seth
