In the early church, we find scattered statements that
affirm mankind’s fall into sin and misery through Adam. At the same time, they
testified to man’s free moral agency. They did not systematically integrate the
two ideas; they asserted human responsibility in order to avoid philosophical
fatalism and to press people to repentance and faith. (Joel R. Beeke and Paul
M. Smalley, Reformed Systematic Theology, 4 vols. [Wheaton, Ill.:
Crossway, 2020], 2:366-67)
