Earlier we wondered out loud how the
historical Jesus could be present to subsequent generations of Christians who
had never known him in his earthly sojourn. Although John Chrysostom clearly
affirmed the real presence of Christ in the eucharistic liturgy through the
ministry of the Holy Spirit and his descent of the gifts (offerings), we can
still ask if this really answers our question of the how (i.e., the means or
mechanisms) of such a presence. If such a question were put to John today, I am
convinced that he would reject the formulation of the question, not by being
overly dismissive but by pointing out that the question does not fit the nature
of mysteries. For a question not be meaningful it must fit the category of the
thing questioned. (Kenneth J. Howell, John Chrysostom: Theologian of the
Eucharist [Washington. D. C.: The Catholic University of America Press,
2024], 146)
