. . . Luke also views the church as a
continuation of the prophetic ministry which, as in the epoch of the OT and
in Jesus’ ministry, is inextricably connected with the work of the Spirit. At
Pentecost, the prophecy of Joel is fulfilled: ‘Your sons and daughters will
prophesy . . . On my menservants and maidservants in those days I will pour out
my Spirit; and they shall prophesy’ (Acts 2:17-18). The work of Christian
prophets is underscored throughout the book of Acts (cf. 11:27; 13:1; 15:32;
19:6; 21:10). Thus, for Luke, the whole of redemptive history in its three
epochs (OT, Jesus’ ministry, the church) is the history of prophecy under the
guidance of the Spirit of God. (Marshall D. Johnson, The Purpose of the
Biblical Genealogies: With Special Reference to the Setting of the Genealogies
of Jesus [Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1969], 251)
