A Moral Image
The Reformers abandoned the Patristic and scholastic
distinction between “image” and “likeness” in favor of a more biblical approach
that sees righteousness as the heart of God’s image. . . . A recognition of the
moral quality of God’s image arises in part from Paul’s description of that
“image” in terms of “knowledge” (Col. 3:10) and “righteousness and holiness of
truth” (Eph. 4:24 KJV mg.). The Westminster Shorter Catechism (Q. 10)
summarizes Paul’s insight into the image of God when it says, “God crated man
male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and
holiness, with dominion over the creatures.” (Joel R. Beeke and Paul M.
Smalley, Reformed Systematic Theology, 4 vols. [Wheaton, Ill.: Crossway,
2020], 2:181)
