"believes and is baptized shall be
saved": ό πιστεύσας και βαπτισθείς σωθηεσται, two substantivized
aorist participles joined by only one article (ó), which means the one
believing must also be baptized, otherwise the believing by itself cannot
produce salvation. This truth is supported by the aorist tense of both
participles, which makes both the believing and the baptism decisive and
determined acts. This grammar coincides with the fact that baptism is more than
a mere symbol of salvation but is the actual means of salvation after belief
has brought one to the baptismal font. (Robert A. Sungenis, Commentary on
the Catholic Douay-Rheims New Testament from the Original Greek and Latin,
4 vols. [State Lina, Pa.: Catholic Apologetics International Publishing, Inc.,
2022], 1:218 n. 446)
