Alongside his often-quoted admission that baptismal regeneration was the unanimous belief of the early Christians in The Church of Rome at the Bar of History (Banner of Truth, 1995), 95-96 (quoted here, for e.g.), Reformed apologist William Webster admitted it elsewhere, too:
Well, with respect to baptism, I think I would probably have
to agree that is one of the very few teachings that you would find, that would
be universally believed by the early Church. . . .The reading that I have done
and have looked into with respect to that subject, it seems like that was a
particular subject that was believed by just about everyone. . . . It is a
pretty safe bet that when you look at Tertullian and Irenaeus and Origen and
Clement and Augustine on down the line they seem to universally believe and to
teach baptismal regeneration. (William Webster, Interview with Author
Bill Webster on New Book About Sola Scriptura, The Dividing Line, December
16, 2000, beginning at the 40:34 mark)
Of course, James White, the
host of The Dividing Line, had to throw out “when they addressed the issue” to
try to save some face (pray, tell, where are the dissenting voices that
explicitly reject baptismal regeneration?—there are none).
