Theodulf of Orleans (9th century) on the “Woman” of Revelation 12

1 A great sign in heaven. God who became man or the church in faith. A woman clothed with the sun, that is, the church [clothed] by Christ.

. . .

5 And she gave birth to a male child, that is, Mary [gave birth] to Christ, who will rule all nations with an iron rod. And her son was caught up to God in the resurrection.

6 And the woman fled, that is, Mary [fled] into Egypt, or the church [fled] in the presentation of Antichrist. (Theodulf of Orleans, “Exposition on the Apocalypse of John (810),” in Carolingian Commentaries on the Apocalypse by Theodulf and Smaragdus [trans. Francis X. Gumerlock; TEAMS Commentary Series; Kalamazoo, Mich.: Western Michigan University, 2019], 51, 52)
