The Jewish writer of the Wisdom of Solomon may already have depended
on Hermetic insight when he wrote that “God founded humanity for incorruption
and made humanity the image of his own eternity” (2:23). In Hermetic thought,
this is more properly spoken of the world. But humanity is still the divine
image in Hermetism, just deferred one more step. The world is the image of God,
and humanity the image of the world. As the world participates in God’s
