Commenting on his baptism in 1831:
I observed that as I believed in
this work that I received the manifestation
of the spirit of God. My mind was joyfully entertained in view of the
prophecies and of this most glorious work of the Lord. On visiting the Church
of Christ, as Coate-wille and having an interview with them I felt it my duty
to separate from Babalon and be baptized. Accordingly I was baptized by Hurum
Smith about the 20th of February, for the remission of sins. As I was baptized
I felt the influence of the spirit of God, for as I stepped out of the water I
was wrapped in the spirit both soul and body, . . . (Jared
Carter journal, 1831 January-1833 January 20, p. 1)
